How motivated are you; Intrinsically or Extrinsically?

Where does your source of motivation lie? Is it intrinsic or extrinsic? Research has proven that majority of people are motivated by the need to gratify external factors because of its immediate satisfaction. Let’s start by first establishing what Motivation is and how it directs workers behaviour towards productivity or otherwise.

Motivation
Motivation is the force that initiates behaviours and directs us to take action. It is the ‘why’ behind certain behaviours. People become productive at work for various reasons, some because they want to be recognised as a good staff and escape being laid off while some it is so they can become best at what they do, to fulfil their desired potential. The forces that drives or motivate us could steam from biological, social, emotional or cognitive components. These forces are either derived internally or externally, they make the sources of motivation, Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation. There are theories that explain the different sources of motivation, read them here.

Intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation describes what people will do without external inducement. Intrinsically motivating activities are those in which people will engage in by not focusing on monetary rewards but for the interest and fulfilment that accompanies them.

Extrinsic motivation
This is a form of externally induced form of motivation; the motivating factors are external, rewards such as money, grades, awards, praise, or winning a contest comes to be seen as the reason one is engaging in an activity, that activity will be viewed as only enjoyable when the pleasure they anticipate is from some external reward it generates.

Intrinsic Vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Often times, people move interchangeably between the two types of motivation. Judith* a business developer confirmed that she is motivated to work with the aim of successfully completing a task, it is the feeling that comes with getting a pass-mark for a job well done, but is also motivated by the promotion and increase in salary that comes with it. Other studies also found that no one is completely intrinsically or externally motivated.  “I am satisfied with my job when I successfully complete my task and get an increase as a result of my efficiency.” Says Mariam* HR personnel.
Intrinsic motivation seems to be the most essential in the work place. It is what makes employees more productive. Dave* Student Relationship Officer, is of the opinion that intrinsic motivation is more essential, the motivation to work when the task at hand becomes a meaningful personal goal and as a form of challenging self. End of the month remuneration is secondary.

What is your source of motivation? I would like to know where you stand on these. Pleas post your comments below.
